Every few years, most central heating systems will benefit from a power flush, and your boiler engineer may recommend it during your boiler’s annual service if they think it would benefit you and you are dealing with regular issues with your central heating.
If you are dealing with cold spots, boilers that simply will not heat up when the system turns on, or strange noises, it could be a sign that a power flush could be particularly beneficial for you, removing headaches whilst lowering your energy bills.
However, could it also possibly not only ease the strain of your boiler but save it from being replaced entirely?
The answer can vary depending on the age and condition of your boiler, as well as the specific issues you are facing, but engineers will often recommend a power flush if it is likely to provide significant benefits.
To understand why, here are the instances of when a power flush can save your boiler, and the times when an engineer may strongly recommend replacement.
When Will A Power Flush Help Save Your Boiler?
Boilers save money in multiple ways when they are working efficiently; not only do they use less energy to heat water throughout your system, but they also do not need to work as intensely, which is usually when problems start to occur, and repairs become necessary.
If you have been dealing with a boiler that has been breaking down or not working as effectively as it used to, clearing the sludge using a power flush can seriously help. As well as this, broken components can sometimes cause contamination, which makes sludge blockages worse.
In general, if your boiler is less than ten years old and yet seems to be struggling with breakdowns and overwork, the problem may not be the boiler itself but blockages in the pipes.
Typically, your heating system should be flushed every five years if there are signs that your heating system is struggling; it is not necessary for every system.
Can A Power Flush Help Every Boiler?
Power flushing is a very useful procedure, but like any other type of boiler repair, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. You cannot power flush every issue away.
A skilled, experienced engineer is fully aware of this and will only suggest a power flush if it will help your heating system.
Power flushing is intensive, and this typically reveals weaknesses in your boiler and your entire heating system. Radiators and pipework that have been weakened over time can be affected significantly.
In general, heating systems that are more than 15 years old without significant repair or renewal may not always be suitable candidates for power flushing. By this point, replacing the boiler will be strongly recommended.
Power flushing is not a suitable fix for broken parts as well, although in some cases, repairs and power flushes will be undertaken at similar times.
Finally, some heating systems, such as electric central heating, twin-entry valve radiators and radiators with narrow pipes (smaller than 1.5cm), cannot be power flushed, and an alternate situation will be recommended in these cases.
If you get a replacement boiler, a power flush will be recommended to ensure it starts out in the best possible condition.
