Boilers really are the unsung heroes of our home, working away in the background to keep us warm and comfortable, especially during the colder months.

In truth, we rarely notice they’re there – until something goes wrong, at which point all hell breaks loose! This is why it’s imperative we keep our boilers in good shape, to ensure they’re effective and reliable when we need them the most. 

One way to keep your central heating system in good shape is with a power flush, and in this post, we’ll be going over the ins and outs of this procedure, explaining what it involves, when it’s needed and what you can expect after it’s been carried out.

Issues With Heating Systems

Due to their constant use, sadly, boilers and central heating systems can sometimes develop problems. These issues can range in severity, from cold spots on radiators and strange noises, to complete system breakdowns that require extensive repairs. 

But what causes these problems? Over time, boilers can accumulate debris, sludge and other contaminants, leading to blockages in pipes and radiators that hamper the system’s performance. This is one reason heating systems can start to develop wear and tear.

Power Flush

This is where the power flush comes in. This procedure is basically like a deep clean for your heating system as it helps to remove built-up debris to return your boiler and piping to its former glory.

We do this by using a specialised flushing unit which connects to your system and circulates high-pressure water or cleaning chemicals through the pipes and radiators, which aims to dislodge and flush out all the nasty gunk that’s accumulated inside.

So, what exactly does a power flush involve? Well, firstly, the engineer will run the rule over your system to determine if a power flush is actually necessary. In some cases, another procedure may be more suitable.

If they decide a power flush is the right approach, they’ll start by adding a cleaning agent to the system to help break down whatever has accumulated inside. After that, they’ll connect the flushing unit and circulate highly pressurised water or chemicals through the system using specialised tools to dislodge and remove any debris.

Once the flushing stage is complete, our engineer would then drain the system and refill it with clean water. We would also add a corrosion inhibitor to protect against future buildup and prevent the need for multiple power flushes.
